Positive Negative Neutral Advice
I will be graduating from UCD in theBrightLanguage - French/Spanish/etc.
I will be graduating from UCD in the fall as an International Relations and Spanish double major. I have loved every single thing about UC Davis from the adorable community to all the opportunities that the campus has offered to augment my studies. People say Davis itself is a boring town with nothing to do but I say that those people never gave it a chance! Davis can be a ton of fun if you are proactive and creative. Sacramento's not far; neither is the Bay Area. The bar/party scene is fun and sociable and I'm stoked about our new Division I sports teams. I'll cherish every moment I've spent at this university and will truly be sad to leave the town when I graduate.

Question
Overall, I would rate my experience at UCQuite BrightEconomics
Overall, I would rate my experience at UC Davis as subpar. From my observations, there are several negative points of which I think all prospective students should be aware.

My biggest gripe with UCD relates to the attitudes of fellow students. The students are nice and all, but as a whole they strike me as unmotivated and not particularly intelligent. Not everyone will feel the same way I do about this, since it depends on the individual's own expectations and standards, but I think that people looking for hardworking and dedicated peers will be disappointed.

I'm also not too pleased with the student life at UCD. The club scene is pretty barren; aside from religious groups and fraternities/sororities, there aren't many student groups to choose from. As an example to illustrate my point, UCD had no chess club when I arrived in Fall 2005 (even my high school had a chess club, and UCD is over 20x its size!). Student groups provide a great avenue for meeting students with similar interests, so I think it's a shame that UCD has such a lousy club scene.

My final complaint in this review is about the economics department. Instructor quality varies greatly, and while the good ones can be quite good, all it takes is some bad luck to wind up with a bad (sometimes very bad) one. Meanwhile, class sizes are always too big (even in upper division courses) for my taste, greatly reducing individual attention. Expect to commit extra effort if you want to get to know your instructors on any reasonable level. The economics *students* also disappoint me, as many seem to have weak conceptual grasp of the material. The average ones can usually go through the motions and solve problems all right (not great), but their inability to explain the economic themes at play leaves much to be desired.Again, not everything about UC Davis is awful, but I think it is important for prospective students to be aware of the negative features I explained above. I have many more opinions to offer (available upon request), but I won't waste everyone's time listing them here.

Question
UCD takes some getting used to.Super BrilliantBusiness - Management and Administration
UCD takes some getting used to. It's pretty much a bubble and a suburban town like any other, only surrounded by nothing and without a shopping mall. Once you get used to this laid back college town environment, it can be a lot of fun...but only if you are proactive in seeking out activities and friends. Otherwise, you will have a lonely experience here.

I highly recommend living in the dorms - you have the best opportunity to meet people here! After your first year, you are on your own for housing and apartment life can be kind of lonely if you don't maintain an active social life.

The social scene revolves a lot around the greek system. Join a sorority or fraternity if you can! But beware that recruitment is tough and you won't get into one unless you are really outgoing and fun and you look good. Many sororities are very superficial.

Academics are ok. Classes are large, but get smaller as you progress. The only great professors I have had were those who were very student-oriented and did little research. Otherwise, most professors do research here. Overall, Davis provides you with the "typical" college experience. Once you get past the first year and hopefully make some friends, you will definitely enjoy the relaxed vibe here at davis. But if you don't find a group of friends, good luck.
