Short list:
I majored in Cell and Molecular biology, but did not hear of Krebb/TCA cycle, or even glycolosis till an elective second semester of my senior year.

My freshman year they never sent me the first semester registration materials, so I got stuck with all eight o'clock classes.

In 1994, they made me take FORTRAN, which has probably not been used since 1974.
Even though I was admitted on an academic scholarship, they did not even inform me about the honors program.

My advisor (Joan Bennett), never helped me even a little. I made two appointments with her, both times she was very unhelpful. The second time, I wanted to do research, and she merely gave me a general suggestion to "look up what people are doing, and go out and sell yourself." At other colleges, like UNO, they have a list of faculty, the research they are involved in, and students get involved that way.

The dorms were awful. The freshman dorm (monroe) had roaches, the elevators did not work half the time, and one year the ceiling of my room in another dorm was covered in mildew. To fix it, they came in and applied a bleach solution, which, after drying, caused plaster to fall all over the room.

The career services department was substandard, with no required meetings or guidance. The job fairs only have jobs for engineers and business school majors.

After graduation:
Two years in a row I did not find out about the DC Tulane club crawfish boil till after it occured.

Question
Tulane was great, a total mix of peopleHistory/Histories (art history/etc.)
Tulane was great, a total mix of people -- a third each from the North, South, and West. Same thing for religion - a third each of protestant, jewish, and catholic. I know a lot of other folks have written that Tulane is nothing but snotty rich kids, I disagree. I was on scholarship and a large portio of the school was receiving financial aid of some sort. No, it's not a cheap school, but if they want you then they'll find a way for you to afford to attend. Same thing with the criticism that the school is too greek -- only a third of the students are in greek life. I had both greek and non-greek friends. TU and New Orleans are fantastic and the school has enough of a name that people are impressed that you went there for college.

Question
Tulane has a clear vision for it's futureQuite BrightBusiness - Management and Administration
Tulane has a clear vision for it's future and few things will get in it's way. They seek smarter classes and more money. Image is everything. After admission, contact with the administration is minimal. Speaking from my personal situation, the advising is abominable. But then again, this school is not for those who need people looking after them. If you can discipline yourself, this university has a lot to offer. If you are prone to becoming distracted, you couldn't make a worse decision than choosing Tulane. Here, you are entirely independent. Nobody cares how you spend your time, if you can get your work done, or if you're failing out. You'll be on your own at Tulane, which yeilds many other opportunities. The university provides countless extracurricular opportunities...if you want to do something, ANYTHING, it can be done. Life in New Orleans revolves around drinking. The university more-or-less endorses drinking. As a freshman, one of my professors took the entire class out to a bar one day (just to give an idea of the culture and lifestyle). Prepare to spend TONS of $$ on the tuition (which I find to be absolutely ludicrous), the housing (it's actually cheaper to live off campus), and the booze. For those who might be looking for a southern-feel, Tulane is most definitely NOT the place. I was hoping to come across some true southern belles here, but I couldn't have been more wrong. The university is nearly entirely Jewish and everybody is from the North. Freshman housing sucks. Freshmen cannot have cars. The nightlife is great, however it revolves mostly around the frats. But on the plus side, Tulane has a good name and has a strong academic program...as long as you can get your work done. Do NOT underestimate the commitment that must be made to academics.

In short, come to Tulane if: 1) you want to go to school with Northerners and be assaulted by the Hillel on the way to class; 2) if you want to party 5 nights a week; 3) if you can handle your own schedule and keep after yourself; 4) you seek a reputable name and strong education; 5) you want to travel and/or study abroad; 6) you can afford it; 7) you want the freedom to do whatever the hell you want.Do NOT come to Tulane if: 1) you are looking for a "community feel"; 2) you want attractive girls with morals and whom were brought-up well; 3) you cannot deal with snobby kids; 4) you are not looking for pot laced with chemicals; 5) you cannot manage your time well; 6) you think it's an endless party and you can B.S. your way through college.
