If you come for history, you won't be disappointed. The Department is great and the Faculty are very helpful. The major is flexible enough that you can really decide what you want to study without too much imposition. But beware, you will have to take courses in other fields, including math/science and three credits in a foreign language in order to fulfill your graduate requirements. That can be quite a hassle.

When freshmen come in, they live on their own campus, complete with a library, all freshman dorms, some classes, and a cafeteria-style eatery. This ensures that the students get to know each other very well. I have not talked to anyone from another college (some at much smaller schools) that knows as many people as i or anyone does at duke. Everyone is very intelligent, nice, and fun and our school is the epitome of the word "college." Though Duke is known for its academics, we have great athletics (along with basketball, we had teams finishing in the top 5 of D1 this past year in golf, womens and mens lax, field hockey, soccer, tennis, cross country, etc. The social life is also great, good fraternity/sorority scene but there are other social outlets besides this. The school is not a great place if one is outside the norm (weird hair, gay, etc) but if you want an amazing education w/ a great social and athletic life, people who know your name all over campus, and probably the most beautiful quad and chapel ever seen at a college campus, come to Duke!
