I have just completed my first year atAveragePsychology
I have just completed my first year at BU and I love it. People say that Binghamton is a place with nothing to do. However, if you engage yourself there is plenty. There is more groups and clubs to count. There is late night Binghamton on the weekends with new activities every weekend. The teachers in my department are amazing and will bend over for you, if you are willing to put the effort in. The teachers don't give you more than you can handle. Overall it is a great school, and I would recommend it to everyone.

Question
I feel as though people who are disappointedAverageLanguage - French/Spanish/etc.
I feel as though people who are disappointed by Binghamton are asking too much from it. Sure, we are not on par with elite private schools or well established state universities. But we are doing a good job for such a young university. Binghamton provides the best "bang for your buck" in the SUNY system. It attracts relatively high quality students.

One of the best things about Binghamton are the extra curricular activities. It is very easy to become involved and there are so many things to choose from. There are a lot of multi-cultural groups, volunteering organizations or publications to choose from.

Social life here comes down to luck and where you live, at least in your first year. Freshmen are required to live on campus their first year and each community has its own personality.Housing ranges from dilapidated 50 year old structures (Dickinson) to gleaming new spacious suites (mountainview). I lived in Newing and I would avoid this place unless you are from Long Island and in a fraternity. The social scene is not dominated by Greek life at all. The only people that go to frat parties are freshmen who have not figured out how to get into downtown bars. State street is the somewhat pathetic arcade of bars that cater to students and the center of Binghamton night life. But there are many people in this school that do not drink so you will not have a hard time finding something to do on a saturday night. There is a significant discord between students and the local population. I find that they are nicer to you if you wear Syracuse apparel.

The quality of education varies by department. Some departments are very good and filled with high quality professors while others are concerned only with research and politics. Binghamton does have a great deal of pre-law/pre-med students who are generally more competitive(read:annoying) than the average student but they concentrated in certain majors.

Binghamton does have it's down sides. One is the lack of geographic diversity. I am from western New York and the only other people from this region are on sports teams. Most people are from NYC or Long Island. Binghamton is diverse racially and ethnically but you often see people staying within their group. You don't see a lot of interaction between groups. There is also a very large Jewish population and Hillel is a big deal. There are definitely certain populations which are more comfortable with the environment here. A lot of people are confused as to why someone from upstate would come here if they didn't have a really good reason. There are times when I wonder that myself.

Binghamton, overall, is a decent school. Its still within the SUNY system. Its pretty starved for cash. There is no football team and everyone has that accent but I feel as though I received an adequate education, especially for the price tag. I feel that Binghamton has nowhere to go but up.

Question
Seriously, ignore at least 75% of the negativeQuite BrightPolitical Science
Seriously, ignore at least 75% of the negative reviews on this Web site. This Web site alone nearly put me off considering Binghamton as a viable choice, and when I did decide to come here, I came expecting to hate my experience for the next four years, thinking of the "ugly campus," the "bad food," the "depressing weather," and "the scary, big campus."

Never have I been more happy to be wrong in my entire life.
It's true, Binghamton may not be the MOST aesthetically pleasing or have the BEST food or climate, but what it has is NOT worth all the bad rep this school gets. It's a state school on the East Coast and in a half-dead city like Binghamton; in terms of student and campus life, you can't compare it superficially to the Ivies and expect it to hold its head high and without shame.

Even if you can't cut the school some slack, however, you WILL be amazed by what the school has to offer each and every one of its students. There are SO many opportunities at Binghamton in academics, extracurriculars, and on the social scene that it boggles my mind how anyone who wants to make the most out of their college experience can sit and complain about life here. If you are a driven college student who wants to do well academically, Binghamton has everything you need to hit the ground running, and then some. Moreover, if you're not a social recluse, you WILL find friends here who will improve your college experience immensely, and allow you to look past the school's non-academic weaknesses with ease.If you want a large and diverse campus, fantastic classes, and an incredibly friendly and helpful student body, and you can suck up the occasionally dreary weather and bad food like the adult that you are, you will love Binghamton. Trust me on this one. I'm a hater-turned-lover of this school, and since I decided to come here, I haven't looked back once. :)
