It seems like everybody is writing similar comments, but I can say without a doubt that Binghamton is what you make of it. If you got into GWU, Cornell, UVA, or any other private university, don't expect Binghamton to reflect the same image; its a public school, and it shows. People are very friendly, and one might say that the most social dorms on campus are in the newing community. Professors are not helpful, and as intellectual or outgoing as you think you are, you are a number. Half the time in lower level courses, your work is always graded by a T.A with little to no experience in the subject they're teaching to you. Professors are arrogant, girls are fat, fraternity life does not even compare to private schools, the town is economically deprived, and its brutally cold during the winter. But all of that aside, I would not change my school because I'm getting a huge bang for my buck. In New York we're highly regarded and my chances at law school are almost equivalent to the looser from Cornell. So I rough it out no matter what. If you want a bang for your buck, Binghamtons your place.

Question
I recently graduated Binghamton, and I think itQuite BrightBiology
I recently graduated Binghamton, and I think it was the best choice for me. I met some amazing people and made friends that I will probably have my whole life. With such a diverse student population, everyone is bound to fit in. It's kinda sad how people of the same ethnicity tend to flock together, but I think that's true of people in all schools.

I was a bio major there and I must say the science department at Binghamton was very impressive. The courses are varied (ie-the biology of AIDS) and challenging. On the other side, there are so many students in some introduction courses that you often feel like a number in the crowd. My general chemistry course had about 400 students and lectures were conducted with a microphone and large screens on three panels of the wall.

The pre-health advising is kinda annoying in that you have to do a lot of menial tasks to appease them, ie-fill out lots of forms, type up addresses on each envelope, buy postcards and write addresses on them. If you want to talk to the adviser you have to make sure you schedule it in advance, and when you arrive you are very prepared.

Your housing experience will vary depending on which community you live in. Some of the buildings were built relatively recently and look like hotel rooms while others are more decrepit. If you are thinking about going there, try to get something in Mountainview.

The weather over there is generally cloudy, and 60% of the time there was something falling from the sky. The buildings and are not very aesthetic, and the landscaping isn't anything special either. If you want to go to a pretty school-this is not it.

People often say there's nothing to do there-And I if you are used to a city like Manhattan I see that as a problem. I personally cant complain about being bored. Movies were only 5 dollars, and the little parkway next to the school was filled with tons of restaurants and stores. There's a mall, bowling alley, ice skating rink, and even a zoo. I forgot to mention the highlight of the area- SUPER-WALMART! There are also many clubs and bars in "downtown Binghamton" so I wouldn't say there isn't anything to do. Those of you trying to decide--good luck with the process, I hope you found this helpful.

Ha, where should I begin, I don't know...
Listen, the whole "the educational value is a great bang for the buck" crap is purely delusional. It's probably the only hope these poor students are clinging to for their dear and miserable lives. It's not worth it. The tri-city area of Binghamton/Johnson/Vestal is dead; there's nothing to be done here. "So what," you say. "I'm here for the education and nothing else." Well, news flash, bud. Ever thought about internships, job experience, volunteering, and clubs/organization participations? Even if you graduate with a 4.0 gpa from this place, you can kiss your dream career goodbye if your resume's completely devoid of these activities.

Believe me, I tried to make the most out of this place but failed miserably on each try. Desperate to add something (something!) on my resume, I tried joining the clubs here. The problem is, clubs like the IEEE or the ASME are poorly managed. All meetings are pointless and nothing significant is accomplished. Stupid small competitions go by unnoticed and the major ones are exclusive to upperclassmen. Oh, there are worse clubs out there. The university's Math and Physics club websites are dead and hasn't been updated in 3 fucking years respectively, which gives me the impression that these clubs suck and are probably dead anyway.

Ok, how about volunteering? I turned in my application to Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, and various organizations but I haven't heard from them since...and it's been 3 months so far...

Forget about getting a job or an internship here. The place is a ghosttown ever since IBM left. (That's right, folks. This shitty place was the birthplace of the world famous International Business Machine company.) This area's full of either immigrants from Ukraine, Russia, and Asia or stupid disgusting townies who probably deserve to live the rest of their worthless lives here for being mediocre (hey! Shoulda graduate from high school!). Just take one look at the cafeteria ladies at the College in the Woods dining hall and you'll know what I mean.

Which leads me to the students...Oh man, I haven't seen a bunch of the sorriest, most average people in my life. All these kids want to do is to drink, dick around with their facebook, tell stupid stories about being so drunk that they *fill in the blank here*. The only thing they look forward to is the weekend so they can have fun by drinking. "Ooh, I'm drunk, I'm having sooo much fun! Nevermind the fact that I'm a mediocre student with no talents or significant accomplishments and that my life has been empty so far. Beer makes me special." Alright, see ya. Intellectual discussions? What intellectual discussions?

It's a pity that for a diverse student body, there tends to be a lot of segregation among members of different races, classes, or hometown location. If you're an out-of-state student or an international student, good luck, bud. Most of the students come here with friends from high school. Most of the students unwillingly come here because they were rejected by the Ivy Leagues or couldn't afford more expensive college...(oh boo hoo, how about working your ass off part time or do well in school to secure a great job? Well, I couldn't go to a better school because my parents' credits were bad and we couldn't find a cosigner...hows that for pathetic?)I won't deny it. I came here knowing that I'll transfer to a better college anyway after two years...goddamn, what was I thinking? I'm getting out of this bumblefuck already!
