I will try to make this review as fair as possible. I am an engineering major ( Industrial Systems ), so I knew what I was getting into when i came to tOSU. It is true that most lecturers are hired for their research ability, not their teaching skills. Even though most of my professors are foreign, they had satisfactory English Skills. The TAs are very helpful and are approachable. Always attend office hours. IF YOU ARE COMING TO COLLEGE TO BE SPOON-FED INFORMATION, DON'T GO TO THE tOSU AND DON'T DO ENGINEERING. Like real life, there will be challenges and people you don't like, but you have to overcome it.

In engineering, freshman year is used to weed-out the people who are not committed. You have to sit in a lecture hall with 200 other students, learning complicated calculus, MatLAB ( programming ), physics, and chemistry. Averages on exams can be between 20% and 80%. Again this is college, the only way to distinguish the brightest is by making each question very challenging. Because engineers as a group are generally smarter than most other groups on campus, they are not ready and accustomed to getting Cs on transcripts and Fs on exams. Don't be disheartened when you education, art, and Poly Sci friends are getting a 90% on their exams. Remember a 3.0 in engineering is always more hire-able than a 4.0 in the humanities and social sciences (besides economics)

The campus is very beautiful, with fall foliage, winter snow, and the spring flowers. Some of the building are in disrepair, but the administration is working hard at construction of new buildings. The campus is big. It has like 5 different bus routes on campus, and like 50 thousand students, but you will tend to notice the same people around you because you will in a cluster of people in your academic department. There is literally a thousand student groups on campus, so if it is hard making friends, check out one that interests you. Ohio State does have a big football culture, a party scene and immense school pride, but alcohol and drugs are not as big as what other posts seem like. tOSU is a public Ivy, we attract students who are getting accepted into the Ivy League, there is a large range of people.

Columbus, Ohio has around 800,000 residents. It is the 15th largest city in the US. The music, food, and art scenes in Columbus are spectacular. Newport and the LC have raging concerts every week in the fall. High Street has a ton of shops, restaurants, and galleries so you will never be bored.

I am an in-state student, so I already can come here pretty cheap. Most of my friends here are out-of-state and they said that the biggest reasons for attendance is affordability and reputation ( have you seen TBDBITL ). tOSU has one of the largest alumni networks. The career services ( especially the engineering career services) are ready to hook you up with an internship of job.

Many people here said the students here are blatantly racist and homophobic. It is true that international students ( by international I mean Chinese) here are sometimes berated, but that is because many of them only hang out with their own race. Columbus is the San Francisco of the Midwest when it to gay-rights. Most students here are socially moderate or liberal, and have nothing against the LGBT community even though many here are religious.

The dorms here are complete shit, worst of every campus I have been to, but the dorms should only be used for sleeping. All studying should be done at the millions of tutoring centers, or at the libraries. ( The libraries here are amazing). even though Columbus is a big city, the cost of living is cheap, and the house rental costs are some of the cheapest in a US city. Also the Dining services are pretty bad, with things called 'Blocks'. Food starts to taste the same after a while.

When it comes to the weather, anything can happen. Its Ohio, deal with it.
I hope this review helps any prospective student. I strongly encourage any student interested in engineering to apply. If you are looking for a liberal arts college with a faculty who is there to guide you at all times of the day, do not apply. If you want to take charge, be independent, and have a wide range of opportunities all at an affordable cost, Come Here
