Before you come here, please consider that theQuite BrightEngineering Department
Before you come here, please consider that the stereotpes in the college books are incredibly untrue. I was actually hoping the campus would be a little nerdier than it is. It is shockingly normal, and the kind of people I didn't expect to find here, the partiers, the dumb jocks, etc, are still here, though in smaller numbers than at other schools. Also, there really aren't THAT many sad little geeks. Don't get me wrong, they're here, but they sort of bond with each other.

Question
I came to CMU from an international school,Quite BrightEngineering Department
I came to CMU from an international school, and was looking to major in Mechanical Engineering. I ended up tacking on a Physics major as well, which made life a bit more difficult.

Students here generally stick together - there's a fair bit of competition but if you're ever stuck someone will always try to help you out and work over the subject.

The social scene isn't the most exciting. Most people cluster together in their fields/frats/organizations but as you get further along in the years there is more intermingling.I'd probably do it again, albeit I wouldn't work as hard as I did.

Question
The school is very demanding of your timeBrightArt & Design Department
The school is very demanding of your time and energy in every major across the board. That effects the social activities outside of class and the comraderie between students is also limiting. The experience will be what you make of it. However, what I encountered is that the administration and professors are not truly there to help students---there is a reason why there is a low graduation rate and that needs to be highlighted and paid attention to. There is much to be learned from the challenging environment but it's easy to be emotionally drained because it's not a supportive or uplifting place, on the whole. Do not link personal vaule with your success at the institution.... There is normal life and entire world outside of the university that will slowly start to fade away. Most students are very driven in one area so someone is more "balanced" might have a harder time at CMU. Also-- knowing what major you want is almost a requirement upon entering and switiching majors makes things QUITE difficult and is often discouraged.
