Out of all the things that make CMUBrightElectrical Engineering
Out of all the things that make CMU cool, I'd say the top one for me is the openness of the departments. I was an engineering major, but I was able to minor in music and take classes and choir with the music majors. It's the rare student that does not minor or double major in something else. Even though this means extra work, CMU is a place where you are allowed and encouraged to explore all of your interests, not just the one you majored in.

Question
CMU instilled a great work ethic.English
CMU instilled a great work ethic. I had to work hard to get good grades there, and once I got into the real world, that "get it done" kind of work ethic helped a lot. I liked the fact that CMU offered a "preprofessional" twist on the English major (my actual major was Professional Writing.)

In retrospect, I'm very glad I studied abroad for a semester. If you're on the fence or wondering -- JUST DO IT! It's an amazing opportunity.

One thing that plagued me during my undergrad years was this sinking feeling that, as an English major, I was doomed to say "do you want fries with that?" upon graduation. Computer-science, business, & engineering folks were genuinely puzzled at why I would major in such an "unmarketable" thing. But I did really well with applying my education to a lucrative and interesting career. My advice would be: "study what you love, and it will work itself out in the end." While you're in school, get a mentor in your field if you can.

Question
Carnegie Mellon is a pretty tough school.Art & Design Department
Carnegie Mellon is a pretty tough school...it acts as a crucible. Put a lot of really intelligent people in, put them under an intense amount of stress, and see who comes out thriving. You do tend to develop strong and lasting friendships because of sharing this trial by fire! For art students, the opportunities to study outside one's major are extremely valuable (they were for me, at least).
