I was accepted to several top-level universities and was unsure of which to attend until the very last minute. However, I am grateful to have chosen Brown literally every day that I am here.

Students here are not only brilliant but also warm, open, friendly.
DIversity encompasses diversity not only of race but also of background, interests, and beliefs.
Brown is the university in which students have the most conrol over their studies- apart from concentration requirements, the only courses you take here are the ones that you want to. And you can shop them. I have loved and enjoyed going to my classes at Brown; though they are challenging, students are so engaged with the material that, for the most part, the work load is not a burden. Students are happy; faculty are more than accessible; deans are your friends and mentors; heirarchy is minimal; research opportunities are available from week 1 if you're proactive.

Question
Brown University is a great University for studentsBrightOther
Brown University is a great University for students interested in their education. Due to the open curriculum, students can pretty much pursue whatever it is that they please. If a student wants a curriculum spread over a broad spectrum of disciplines, or one that is more focused, they can do so. Because of the lack of gen ed requirements, it is very likely, for example, to see a pre-med student concentrating in History, or on the other end of the spectrum, a student who never takes a single course in the math, physical or life science departments. If you aren't sure what you want to study, however, it is important that you try out classes in a variety of departments. You will likely be surprised with what you find. Take advantage of the open curriculum. It's great.

As far as social life goes, it is important to understand that while Brown students tend to have more liberal perspectives, both socially and politically, there are conservatives who are quite happy here! Honestly, there are students of ALL types here. Don't let stereotypes fool you. Campus safety is very important to the University, however, experimenting is not discouraged. :) The Brown administration and campus department of safety know the types of activities that college students partake in and as long as no one is in danger, they tend to leave students alone. Brown is awesome, and anyone with a desire to learn should check it out.

Classes: I love the open curriculum, but someQuite BrightUndecided
Classes: I love the open curriculum, but some of the classes are too focused for me. I am interested in tons of subjects, but I want a broad education, not a sporadic one.

Classmates: Overwhelmingly liberal. If you are conservative, you will feel isolated, and your friends will laugh at you (or just acquaintances). Brown is not as open-minded as I was told. In fact, the viewbook Brown is an ideal that honestly, is false. Plenty of people love it here, but only if they fit the Brown mold or are just incredibly easy-going. Conservatives beware! Brown irks me to no end, especially with events like Sex Power God, which a friend of mine called "pure debauchery."

Education: You can get a great one here, but don't expect the students to be as intellectual as was promised. Half of the boys in my unit literally spend hours and hours every day playing video games. Lots are just your typical partiers, which I don't mind, just not quite what I expected from Brown. I feel deceived by Brown, as for what it was going to be like. Perhaps the students are just too individually different (but still all liberal) to really describe in a coherent fashion.I am considering transferring, but if you aren't a silly conservative who chose Brown because it was an intellectual Ivy, then I bet you'll love it!
