Brown is the place to go if youSuper BrilliantNeuroscience/Cognitive Science
Brown is the place to go if you are fiercely independent in spirit. The atmosphere provides an ambience of live and let live, and the students are able to speak to you about their interests. Faculty really treat you well and respect your autonomy; however, there are the occasional faculty members who make you feel as if you are a waste of their time. Beware of the badly reviewed professors because they are often just that - bad. The campus is beautiful, and Brown University will teach you how to "THINK" more than any other school in the country--that is for sure. Virtually all students here do what they do with a passion and most really deeply love what they study. You will meet some amazing, dynamic, and energizing people at this university.

Question
Brown years are probably the most memorable yearsMechanical Engineering
Brown years are probably the most memorable years of my life to date. It is an amazing place, right on top of the hill, where you are hurrying around for a class, eating a quick lunch, enjoying the main green, walking on Thayer street, studying in Sci Li and the list goes on.

Being an engineering major, I was pretty much confined to Barus and Holly, the engineering building. The classes are small in size and the attention you get as a student is amazing. You really get to know your cohort of engineering students (at least by face) because they are the ones who are not basking in the main green on the weekends when the weather is really good. But the upside is that you get to know material which is substansive and getting difficult things done decently is always a good feeling.

Engineering majors should be prepared to have a different lifestyle. There is a lot of work and upper level classes become theoretical and difficult, so you have to put in some energy to learn the concepts well. However, there is plenty of time to hang out or just relax. People wanting to go to grad school for engineering/business should have absolutely no problem getting in the program of their choice if they did well in coursework. My acceptance rate was 100% for grad school (all schools that I applied to were top notch). It struck me at that point that Brown's reputation in general is superb as an undergrad school of top caliber.

The campus is just too nice. Main green and Wriston are very pretty. I liked all my dorms and eating halls a lot.

The people at Brown are also cool. There are a lot of fashionable male and female students here, especially in the humanities department. Generally outgoing, friendly and concerned about their own learning. It is all about personal development on this campus.

Off campus life is a bit dull but you dont need that really. Having a car is nice so that you can go to Boston and enjoy the drive as well.

I especially liked the sports facilities. Squash courts, athletics, gym, pool etc all close to the campus and dorms.

You could also run up or down the hill if you felt super fit.
Overall, an amazing experience that stays with you forever. Great people, great air, great academics.

Question
Though an ivy league school of great notoriety,Quite BrightOther
Though an ivy league school of great notoriety, Brown has started to slip in the past few years. Yes, the professors and classes will still run you into the ground, if that"s what you're in to. But if you went to college to party and have a good time, you will be severely disappointed. Be ready for on and off weekends, and lots of nights just chilling with your boys in a dorm room doing generally nothing. Thursdays are almost guaranteed to be lame, and most Friday and Saturday nights end around 1 am because that's when the frats run out of alcohol. Not to mention, to get into the frat you usually have to wait in line for about an hour because the University plants monitors at the parties who don't let the brothers pack the house the way it should be. Also the University does nothing to help its students beyond providing teachers; it is the stingiest, most uncaring corporation in the world of higher education. The food is shit, the social groups are shit, and instead of helping them out, Ruth Simmons and her cronies skim all the profits to pad their own salaries. Its like a microcosm of America for the past four years (Brown gave a total of $900,000 to ALL its student groups last year to support an undergraduate class of 6000... this is out of a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars, by the way, and that's not including money from investments, endowment funds, or donations).

About the only good thing Brown has going for it is the open curriculum. That is, outside your major, you can take whatever you feel like. That's why I recommend taking a major with very few requirements, like Lit Arts (10 classes), so you can fully utilize this.

Now, the people here are not that bad. Most of them are interesting enough to give the time of day, though granted there are a lot of very cold, condescending assholes (mostly the attractive women... what a shocker - which, I should mention, there are much fewer of than one would expect). However, there are some cool people who like to party till 5 am every weekend, but by party I mean getting drunk with dudes in the nearly empty frat bar. Its really just oppressive. I highly recommend NOT applying here, unless you have no desire to party at all during college. Then you'll be pleasantly surprised every once in a while.Oh, and did I mention the parties suck? Like seriously, way lacking on the rampant alcoholism, drug use, and sex that I hear about from all my friends around the country. If you come here, be rich enough to afford being an alcoholic for the next 4 years so you can forget about the lack of fun.
