Brown University

The extended Brown Community (students, faculty, alumni, parents) has many many inspiring individuals: people who are simultaneously imaginative, brilliant, successful, and friendly. Going to Brown helped me set my sights much higher as to how my life could be: for achievement, for creativity, and for happiness. The only downside is that (when I was at Brown in the late 80s) there were few "guides" to helping me make the most of my time. Not that I think many other schools or environments had what I would have been looking for -- but it's a shame. My sense is that Brown and other institutions are doing a better job now with helping students make the most of their college experience.

Brown is wonderful! The students are interesting, creative and unpretentious. The graduate schools are small so the university is attentve to the needs of undergraduates. The two weeking shopping period before classes means you end up with classes you really enjoy, not just ones that look apppealing on paper. My professors have all been great. The lack of a core curriculum encourages independence of thought. Additionaly, Providence is a great small city. I love it here.
