Don't be too quick to write Furman offQuite BrightPsychology
Don't be too quick to write Furman off because it isn't ranked as highly as some of the top liberal arts schools. Lack of "name brand" recognition aside, I truly believe that anyone who goes here will receive a top-notch education. Just like MANY Furman students, I was accepted into some big name schools, but chose to attend Furman due to their giving me a very generous merit scholarship.

I believe the teaching quality here is just as good as elsewhere. The classes are small and the professors are accessible and truly wants to connect with every student. I have been shocked with the amount of individual attention I have received.

However, if you are looking for the stereotypical "Ivy League" sort of intellectual atmosphere among students, where students debate philosophy and politics far into the night, that will be difficult to find. Although Furman students are extremely bright, I feel they are driven by grades rather than learning for its own sake. A small failing of the student body; however, if you wish to have this experience I am sure you could find it somewhere if you look hard enough.

Campus culture - very much white, Christian, Southern. There is drinking and partying, but not nearly as much as most schools, so I wouldn't come here if you are looking for that. Most students study very hard, almost continuously. So many people go home on weekends that it often feels like a suitcase school. Dining Hall (DH) food isn't great. Greek scene is big, but I'm not part of it and am doing fine. GERS (Gen Ed Requirements) are extensive and can be a little annoying, but the profs are so good that they're not really that bad. NOTE: Yes, you really do need a car. Promise.

Two more thoughts:

First, the psychology department is wonderful. It is one of the hardest majors on campus, but worth it 100 times over. Every professor in the dept is ridiculously brilliant, wonderful teachers, and SO caring about their students. My major classes have been far and beyond the best classes I have taken, and all the students have bonded into a big family. Can't believe I'm graduating in only two more years!Second, STUDY AWAY. Furman has WONDERFUL study away programs where you travel with a few Furman professors taking classes from them. Yes, it sounds a little field trip-y, but with their guidance you would be able to learn and do things you perhaps wouldn't be able to if you were studying abroad alone.

Question
I live in California and I had neverEconomics
I live in California and I had never heard of Furman until I began my college applications. I began to look more into it and realized how strong their academic program was. The campus looked amazing and it seemed like everyone there would be really nice. Within the first month I regretted coming to this place. It is filled with a bunch of arrogant, closed-minded people. The people were incredibly self absorbed and thought so highly of themselves just because they had money. The atmosphere reminded me of a pathetic middle school. There were cliques of people including the jocks, nerds, mean girls etc. It was absolutely pathetic. These kids were stuck in their little "bubble" of conceitedness and they acted like a bunch of jerkoff middle school kids trying to be in the "popular" group. The party scene was absolutely pathetic. If you like partying even a LITTLE, DO NOT COME HERE. I went to several of the frat parties and they reminde!

d me of my 6th grade dances. Many of the people I talked to had never had a beer in their lives and frowned upon drinking. (They probably could have used a few beers to help get the stick out of their asses and have a little fun). Im not saying you have to drink to have fun, but honestly, the only way these pathetic parties would be fun was if you drank. The few kids that did drink thought they were SOOO cool because they drank and were considered totally "Badass". Truly PATHETIC. If you like to spend your weekends playing video games and gossiping about stupid shit, come to Furman, you will fit in perfectly. otherwise stay AWAY. I left after one semester and transferred to San Diego State University last month. I finally don't have to deal with the gay middle school drama that revolves around Furman. When those people graduate they are going to have no idea how to adapt to the real world. These kids have been sheltered all their lives and will continue to be througho!

ut their time at Furman. At SDSU I have experienced more in a !
month than I would have all 4 years at Furman. The parties are better, I can be independent, I am not sheltered like a little kid, the people are nice, normal, and diverse, and I am not trapped in a bubble with a bunch of egotistical assholes. Save yourself and do not go to Furman!!!

Question
I began my college experience at another schoolHistory/Histories (art history/etc.)
I began my college experience at another school and soon realized it was not a good fit. I transferred to Furman for my sophomore year and although I'll admit I had second thoughts, Furman turned out to be an amazing experience. I was pushed academically and well prepared for graduate school and life after college. LIke any university there are terrible professors, but the good ones far outweigh them. Also, like any university there are administrative policies that are unpopular amongst the student body, but Furman is not unique when it comes to this. I feel blessed and fortunate for having gone to one of the best universities in the country. I often times find myself upset over such negative, unwarranted comments that are written about my alma mater. Former students crying about how it's not really a good school and how upset they are with the administration. To not even admit that the academics are outstanding at Furman is unfounded. If you take issue with administrative policies, that's fine, but don't expect it to be any different at another school.
