Positive Negative Neutral Advice
I thought this school would be perfect.Quite BrightBusiness - Management and Administration
I thought this school would be perfect. I wanted a small liberal arts school in the south. I have always been extremely conservative so Furman seemed perfect. I also wasn't looking to be too challenged academically, and as we all know, Furman academics are a joke. But I arrived on campus and was immediately disappointed. First of all, the girls here are hideous. The few pretty girls are quickly ruined by the gossip of the majority of the girls, the ugly and jealous ones. It is honestly depressing to walk around this campus, not only because of the ugly girls (do you know what it is like not seeing a pretty girl for weeks?) but also because of the poor upkeep of the grounds. Although it is a beautiful campus, the grounds crew does a terrible job keeping it that way. There are many areas of dead grass, weeds grow through the walkways and the gardens grow wildly. There is also so sense of community on campus. The faculty honestly do not interact with the students outside of the classroom. I have said hello to many of my professors in passing and have yet to receive a reply, so although my classes are small, it doesn't mean we connect with our professors. Even my advisor has been of little help. He has refused to meet with me regarding academics, and when I did show up in his office, he began to yell at me and kicked me out of his office. There is also no school pride on campus. The stands are empty at football games, mainly because our football team is pathetic, and most people are embarrassed to attend Furman. I refuse to wear the Furman purple. But all of this I think I could live with. It would be livable. But, when you put the students onto the campus it is even worse. When I think conservative, I think of wealthy kids in polos, not church going, purity ring wearing southerners who frown upon all forms of fun. There are kids here who refuse to kiss girls until marriage....It is actually absurd. And then the parties are terrible too. The few parties that are thrown on the weekends are small and it is usually more fun to find a few kids and go drink in your room. Of course there are Resident Advisors going room to room trying to catch kids drinking, and you will be punished when you are caught. I feel like I have been rambling, actually I know that I have been. But I really just want people to know that this school is a joke. It isn't fun and it isn't challenging. The girls are gross, and the guys are lame. I am embarrassed to be here and hope that this deters someone else from making the same mistake that I did.

Question
I went out on a limb deciding toQuite BrightGeography and Geosciences
I went out on a limb deciding to attend FU, coming from the complete opposite side of the country and having had very little knowledge about the school or South Carolina in general, but I definitely do not regret my decision. Furman has at times been frustrating to me, with some closemindedness among certain groups as well as a fair bit of elitism among the many wealthy students. This being said, having come from a humble background and having grown up in Colorado I did not find myself ostricized in any way and found that the majority of students embrace the university's progressive new approach to diversifying its student body both racially and geographically.

The social scene isnt stellar, but if you are willing to sacrifice the outrageous parties you would find on larger campuses and make the best of Furman, you can find a good time in Greenville almost any night. Joining a fraternity, something I wasnt initially expecting to do, definitely facilitates a much more active social life and has been a great experience for me. If you're worried that the whole student body is going to be book worms with no life, fear not. Many students here, at least what we like to call the social six hundred (joking, sort of), keep the nightlife reasonably exciting, and there will normally be something entertaining to do in Downtown Greenville as well.

Academically, I feel that Furman has exceeded all my expectations and has, as the slogan would suggest, engaged me in my learning. I study here exponentially more than i did in High school, both because the material is more fullfilling and beccause the price tag makes it hard to justify slacking. The professors that I've had so far have all been genuinely concerned about their students and their quality overall has been quite good.Overall, I would reccomend giving Furman a look, the campus is drop-dead gorgeous, Greenvilles a surprisingly cool city and the school's gaining a national reputation academically.

Question
Choosing Furman was the best choice I everQuite BrightPsychology
Choosing Furman was the best choice I ever made, because I think I am receiving the BEST ivy-league quality education without dealing with ivy-league snootyness. I love that Furman is a small school (about 2800 students) because it means that my professors know who I am and are more than willing to help me when I need it. Furman is a community, and it is an engaging community with scores of opportunities for personal and intellectual growth. ONe thing to keep in mind is that the academics are VERY challenging. Students who are not dedicated, intrinsically motivated, and hardworking will not get by here. At Furman, the focus is on education rather than on partying--of course that does NOT mean that nobody has friends or fun, in fact there are frat parties every weekend and many students go out downtown during the week and weekend. There is also a strong greek presence, but greek organizations are more down-to-earth, more intimate, and less snobby than they seem to be at larger state schools.
