Positive Negative Neutral Advice
The Social Work College at UTA is notBrightSocial Work
The Social Work College at UTA is not run by social workers. They abuse the power they have consistently. This is evident in the way they treat their students and they even admit to being unimpressed that the students are the consumers.

They are not informative. Advisors are inconsistent; administration is condescending and consistently humiliates the students.

We are treated more like belligerent merchandise to be sent down an assembly line than consumers there to be served.

The field department is prejudicial; they practice discrimination in every way except ethnicity, they are very careful about that. If you fall outside any other norm then they will jump on the opportunity to treat you with total disrespect.

They request the impossible. Don't bother doing field if you have a family or yourself to support. Internship is a slavery system and does not consider that people have to live and eat. I learned nothing, but worked hard for free.

One student who was in the hospital when a paper was due and was told by the instructor, no real professors teach very many classes, that she could turn it in late, there was a witness to this interaction. Then the instructor would not accept the paper on the agreed upon date. The student failed the class by 1 point, otherwise she has a B average. When she went to request a review of the grade she was denied. The dean of the college even admitted that they look upon anyone that uses the grievance process as liars and cheats. In other words the grievance process is a kangaroo court. This student is on welfare and can not afford to pay for the class she had to take again. Now they are holding her degree until she pays. She was trying to get her and her daughter off of well fair by getting a degree.

Even though UTA Social Work College is really big on Social Workers getting their masters degree, I am not masochistic enough to continue my studies at UTA. I am beginning to think that the Masters degree is just to make the college more money.

Question
After spending summer 2010 and fall 2010 atQuite Bright
After spending summer 2010 and fall 2010 at UTA i am already planning on transferring to another univesity in Fall 2011. I transferred from a DCCCD college with about 50+hrs. It was my choice because it was a very easy transfer and close to home. Because i was there in the summer i was able to land an on-campus job in the Financial Aid office. I was lucky to get that job as a transfer because i gained alot of valuable knowledge and experience other students didnt know or have access to. However, if i didn't end up working in the FA office i would have been just as lost as many other students. The campus tours and preview days arent a good assessment of the campus. They dont tell you that this school is mainly focused on engineering, architecure and nursing and if you are any other major good luck. They dont tell you that the meal plans are worthless. They dont tell you that living in the dorms could be a complete waste of your money and that your RA's are NEVER around to assist you. They don't tell you that they are going use some of the money you pay for tuition on Ipads to give to the faculty! These are things i learned the hard way.

As far as academics go you have your "hard, no BS" teachers and you have your "easy, go once or twice a week and study the evening before an exam and ace it teachers" (but that is the same for anywhere you go). When i came to UTA nursing intended they didnt tell me they were downsizing their faculty and the amt of students they'd accept to the nursing school. Or that they were raising their minimum GPA for you to even being considered to 3.75! I had a solid GPA at the time and didnt feel it was worth waiting another yr to retake courses and reapply to be CONSIDERED,so i changed my major. Now what i want to do for a major isnt offered here so i'm transferring. This school doesnt have enough majors or course offerings. Moving on... Your social life will be as fun as you want it to be or as boring as you want it to be.You have to find your niche. Because it is a commuter campus, during the day it looks like there are so many ppl and occasions to make friends but at around 3pm 70% of those ppl leave for home. So living on campus you see alot of the same faces and you start to feel pretty bored and like high school all over again with the cliques .

I was a very shy person and my advice for others like me is to GET OVER IT! At some point you have to come out your shell and college is the perfect time otherwise you'll be alone- period. So if you are coming to me asking for advice on how to make friends and you are an introvert I will tell you to change. The world isn't gonna rub your belly and hold your hand. Make things happen for yourself. There are over 400 active student orgs but since i've been here i've seen about 10 actually being active- so that sucks. You do have alot of opportunity for leardership because of this though! 99.9% of my friends were international students. Thats a positive about the engineering program- it brings people from all over the world to this campus. Most all of the positive people are in christian orgs so for someone with alternative views like myself it was originally hard to make friends. Be careful with people who are trying to start cults and call themselves prophets! That actually happens here! Really weird. Basically, UTA is a decent school academically. I?d rate it a C+ on academics. If it wasn't for the friends I made here I would say I wish I never came here but this place was a great stepping stone so now I am ready to move 6hours away from home. This probably didn't help much, but that's my opinion. : )

Question
I transfered here very easily after doing 2AverageBusiness - Management and Administration
I transfered here very easily after doing 2 years at a Junior college...the problem was there was no transfer orientation. I had to find how to register for classes on my own, had to find my way around on my own, and had to figure out financial aid on my own. 3 of my 4 instructors in the first semester had VERY heavy accents (guess which classes I failed) and 1 instructor was sick at LEAST once a week (twice when it got colder). My first semester did not end well at all and when I complained to the department their basic opinion was "suck it up, this is college". In the second semester my wife became sick about the halfway mark. When I withdrew from the university it was after losing my job and when my wife was admitted to the hospital...they had the nerve to ask me to refund ALL of my money, the money I had already spent on books, tuition, and on my wife's medicines. Needless to say I do NOT reccomend UT Arlington but I do have a brother who started 3 years after me and says that they HAVE improved quiet a bit. For a good research university UT Arlington is great...but for undergraduate studies where you are not surrounded by 500 asians with a superiority complex I would say go somewhere else.
