The University of Texas - Arlington

I am a transfer student from a community college where the professors realized that the majority of students work now days and I was not treated as a number. However, when I reached UTA the faculty was rude and could care less who I was. Whenever I asked a professor for help on the subject he/she would direct me towards the Teaching Assistant for help. The professors gear their lectures towards a research perspective rather that a practical working world lecture. The college is highly geared towards research rather than helping the students become ready for a career. Most classes in the CSE department are offered in the middle of the day with only ONE professor teaching the subject. My advice to anyone who is looking into this school is to realize that unless you live on campus and don't work the classes will be a waste of time and you will not receive the proper help you need. Most of the assignments given in class are busy work that does not help convey the subject matter. I would NOT recommend this school to anyone interested in pursing their engineering career here that has a job and financial responsibilities.

2nd Year Male -- Class 2006

I had a better experience before I switched over to the Communications Department. The Communications department is a nightmare as of the writing of this review. It is very clubby, and by that I mean unless your part of their club you almost certainly are not going to get much out of the experience. I feel as if am just in feeling cheated, and angered over the whole experience. I payed a couple thousand dollars expecting to learn something that I could use and freely be given the chance at getting a great grade. Instead this whole semester, I admit I only took two classes this semester, I found teachers that seemed to be tools, and who were far more concerned with hearing them selves talk, and wanting every class to seem like they were just oh so good with words also known as being glib.

I did not feel like i was part of the "club" or fraternity. I hate to use the word fraternity because I have nothing against Greek life, and I hate to associate the two groups, but it seems fitting.

I felt unwelcome almost from day one, and I felt forced to endure endless hours of teachers wanting to see how entertaining they could be. At one point I thought if I could ignore this sherade then I could just mind my own business, produce decent projects, and get decent grades, and it would not matter that I felt so cheated constantly. However, my situation began to seem more serious when It seemed to me that there were shreds of evidence that I was not being graded by the same standards as my other class mates, or even objective enough. In summation, at this time the communications department is a fraternity, and it seems to me that some teachers take their job very seriously, and unless you are part of the club sadly, you may meet obstacles, as I feel I have. I for one have no interest in joining this bee hive, star-trek borgesque mentality. I plan on continuing to work hard, and find ways to freely be given the opportunity to earn a decent grade for the thoughtfulness, and work I have already, and wish to continue to put in.

2nd Year Male -- Class 2010

I hated this place and everything within close proximity to the campus. The town it's in is overly conservative and the people are closeminded to say the least. UTAs student body is a direct representation of this town. The classes were an insult to my intelligence, my coursework was less challenging than the work I completed in my 9th year of high school. I felt completely unmotivated and drained of any enthusiasm I may have had about attending college. There is NO college experience unless you're involved in greek life and lets be honest even that's a joke here. Basically all you have to do in order to join a fraternity/sorority is show up at the recruitment events. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have left this place and to be currently attending a great college hundreds of miles away from this ridiculous excuse of a school. Btw don't expect anything from the administration here, it's run by the students and from what you've probably already deduced from this comment the students here are a little less than incompetent. I suppose I'm just slightly bitter since I was more than capable of going to a better school but due to financial difficulties I was forced to endure this place for more than a semester. Please, if you're are reading this as a prospective student and you have the choice to go elsewhere then do so. This place will just waste four years of your life that could have been spent at a real university.
