I went to UT because of the 'wonderful'Not so brightAnthropology
I went to UT because of the 'wonderful' Anthropology program. What a joke! My classes were ridiculously easy, my community college I previously attended was ten times more challenging! A lot of busy work and busy reading is assigned, lectures don't hold a lot of importance. Students were able to miss every class but test day and were still able to pass with flying colors.

I also really hoped to have the 'college experience' here. Unless you want to join Greek life, the social scene is awful. Being social at UT consists of heavy drinking, heavy drug use, and sex. The few students that didn't party tended to keep to themselves and didn't get out much. Everyone else just walked around like broken zombies. (Don't even get me started on the Mac users and their club.)

Austin itself is a pretty neat city. I liked being able to walk everywhere. However, being yelled at by belligerent homeless people got tiring fast. The city isn't nearly as diverse as advertised. I come from Houston which is an extremely diverse city, Austin is just filled with a bunch of white people. The student body can often come across as arrogant liberals, even the professors. A professor once told me I was judgmental for saying that it was wrong to have sex with children in spite of what religious doctrine dictates.

Overall, I made a horrible mistake by coming here. If you're coming here to party, join Greek life, and get by with easy classes this is the school for you. However, if you're going to UT for the academics and intelligent student body.. go elsewhere. I left after a mere semester, what an awful school.

It's true you will see very little diversityNot so brightCommunications
It's true you will see very little diversity at University of Texas at Austin. There is discrimination against minorities like other posters have said. Some students and professors get away with discrimination, retaliation, and bad behaviors and nasty comments because administration allows it to happen and looks the other way.

The assignments and homework range from being incredibly boring to somewhat useful. Lectures are overall useless. Professors have a "you don't matter" arrogant attitude.

The behavioral concerns hotline is set up by the university to spy on students. Anybody can leak information against you so that the university can protect itself against law suites and so the university can use the information against students to punish them. It points to the fact that the university administration is paranoid and out to get you as a student. You feel as though you are being watched and stalked. You can bet negative information and rumors about you are leaked to all your professors and advisers.

A UT student was removed off the football team because of certain comments made on facebook by his friend. The story actually made media coverage. That is really pitiful. It just goes to show that UT is spying on the students.

Administration is condescending and will lie to you about anything.
The free counseling is completely unprofessional and inept, they push an agenda onto students and force them to comply by using aggressive tactics. Avoid that at all costs.

Student organizations are useless because everybody that goes is socially inept and unfriendly.

Not so bright
My advice is to avoid this campus. It is not liberal nor is it friendly. Stay away.
