UT is a fantastic school.BrightPerfomance Arts
UT is a fantastic school. Because of its size, it has abundant resources. The first couple of semesters make you feel like just a number, lost in the shuffle, but by the sophomore or junior year, class sizes become smaller and more intimate. Professors are generally friendly and helpful. Being taught by grad students can have mixed results. Lower level math/science classes are often taught by grad students whose understanding of English is quite subpar. This can be frustrating, but these classes usually aren't too difficult.

It's not a public Ivy that some people try to make it out to be. The business school, engineering school, and geosciences school are all prestigious, but for other programs, UT is no better or worse than any other big, state, public university.

I never cared for the student body as a whole while I was here. Too many are too self-absorbed. I got lost on campus the first night I was here and nobody really cared enough to stop what they were doing and give me decent directions. There's just not a sense of camaraderie here. It doesn't matter if you go to UT as well, to a lot of the students here, you're just another total stranger and they're too busy. Too many bookworm types who can succeed academically but lack social skills.

I didn't care for the actual campus, either. It's so small that you feel like you're in a little enclave of Austin rather than a big university. The buildings are really cramped. It's too bad they didn't give the school more room when they built it.

There's some attractive, classy girls here but there's also some not-so-attractive who think they are more important than they really are. You just have to be picky. It does take effort to make friends here. Most of the time, you'll make far more acquaintances than friends. Austin's a fun town but the traffic is horrible in downtown Austin, mainly due to small lanes. If you can put up with all this, more than likely you'll have a marketable degree (as long as the major's decent). But for me, I wanted more out of my college experience.

Question
This is an excellent university.Super BrilliantBiology
This is an excellent university. period. All faculty are among the brightest within their field. This is an academically challenging school but you are rewarded if you fully understand what you are learning and work hard. The only reason why U.S. News and Reports lowers its rankings is because UT doesn't go all out to heavily fund raise and beg the wealthy for money for research because UT owns Texas oil fields and real estate.
