While JMU has a solid reputation, my undergrad experience revealed an academic standard that is falling behind other universities in the commonwealth. Friends I have going to other universities like W&M, GMU, and Tech tell me about complex projects, collaboration with local companies and students at other universities as part of their undergrad experience. None of that was available in the normal coursework at JMU.
I think some of their programs are resting on ratings and achievements of the past. The campus is pretty, but in need of maintenance, additional dorms and facilities and is showing its age.
A lot of the students have a snooty attitude about JMU as if it were UVA or Harvard.While JMU is a solid undergrad institution - its not outstanding and is not worth the price or remote location.

JMU is a solid institution with a nice campus - although stuck in the middle of Harrisonburg. While the academics are good - I think JMU's lack of graduate programs, research programs, and notable faculty risk it being passed up by other universities within Virginia.
There are a lot of parties, but the surrounding city and school admin are clamping down regarding alcohol policies and the like. About 4300 students live on campus - most commute from the surrounding community. The football games are fun to watch - but otherwise - the athletics are somewhat lacking.
Some of the buildings are showing their age and I think JMU needs to put together better maintenance and campus plan to keep up with the other universities in Virginia. Given its cost and out of the way location - I would have made a different choice for my undergraduate school

James Madison University is a great university! It is aesthetically beautiful, the people are nice and the food is really delicious! The University as a whole is very spread out, though with careful planning and depending on your major you can schedule most of your classes on the quad. Though JMU is not the largest university, it is very open and many places to explore! You get the large university experiece without feeling overwhelming. However that being said JMU is growing rapidly with construction going on every day, so it will quite large soon.
Competitiveness isn't a major issue unless you're in the school of music! The music majors are hardcore so if you're wanting to major in music it will be no easy task! Other majors are competitive but it isn't cut throat. The class size is respectable and I've yet to be in a class with more than 50 people. All of the professors will go out of their way to help students succeed, and I've yet to hear of a professor from hell! I will say that GenEd (our general education program to make sure you're "well rounded") is a little steep and maybe even unnecessary. Just get them out of your way and you can concentrate on your major!
Diversity isn't the best, but it's improving. You'll find that a lot of the people are the same, but there is still lots of different cultures to explore. There are some people who are stuck up but overall most people are down to earth!
