UVM IS AWESOME! In the past decade, itBrightBiology
UVM IS AWESOME! In the past decade, it has made incredible strides in terms of its reputation. University of Vermont is awesome because anyone can fit in here. There are all kinds of people and some really amazing opportunities for undergrad students. Burlington is a great college town- its a beautiful place, although sometimes it's very quiet with not too much going on.I highly suggest coming here; I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Was a national merit scholar.BrightPhysics
Was a national merit scholar. Came here not expecting the quality of education that I would have found at a private University, so I was pleasantly surprised. Though the begining courses did not challange me nearly as much as some of the other students in my classes, the ability to learn more outside the classroom with the professor is very easy to do.

Question
I came to UVM mostly because my statusBrightMath
I came to UVM mostly because my status as a National Merit Scholar got me a substantial scholarship. At first, I thought I was just going to "slum it" at a state school, but it turns out that UVM is a serious, challenging, and wonderful university.

The math department here is pretty solid. A lot of the professors here are very well known in their fields, they're always available to help or to just chat, and the courses are challenging and interesting. If I have *any* gripe with the department, it's that they don't have the full range of mathematical subjects (no differential geometry, for instance), but this is really grasping at straws.

The dorms I live in are nice (University Heights), but some of the other freshman dorms are pretty lousy. The food's all right, but you will probably get sick of it after a while, so get ready to order out or to actually go out every once in a while to relieve the monotony of over-priced campus food.

The students here are quite varied, which is great. You WILL find a group of people you like being with and you'll learn to live with (and maybe even appreciate) people who don't necessarily share your interests. Yes, there's a lot of marijuana and drinking here, but you can very easily avoid it if you choose to (I successfully have). Same deal with the party scene. But yeah, the academics are solid, the profs are nice, the students are great, and it's just a wonderful place to be.
