It's a great school complemented with beautiful natural surroundings. Unabashedly liberal; the school actually focuses its advertising towards and is intended for people who tend towards the left end of the political spectrum. You will feel like you don't belong there if you are conservative minded- in fact conservatives are often viewed here as being totally immoral (at least in my personal experiences here). Where these people got the idea that political ideology and morality are so closely connected I will never know. In fact the lack of diversity I experienced here was astounding. I'm white, and even I felt uncomfortable at times with how white campus was (I am from a large city, which could account for this). If you are used to diversity this school will probably seem like a very strange place, or at least it did to me. Many of the students do not seem to be aware that not everywhere is like New England. Overall I would agree with what the other person said- don't go to UVM unless you are from the Northeast USA, as it is tailored exactly towards people from this demographic.

Question
UVM is a fantastic school which provides aBrightMath
UVM is a fantastic school which provides a great academic setting. The faculty are very helpful and I found the classes to be very engaging. So UVM gets that part exactly right. What I ended up not liking about UVM was the social scene. You will have a hard time fitting in unless you are very, very liberal (at times its to the point where its unrealistic). There are a lot of hippies, and skateboard/snowboarding punks. It doesn't feel like a fully fledged college to me, more like a hybrid of college and high school. The townies will probably not treat you very well if they perceive you to be an out of stater. The party scene is OK, but overall I thought it was kind of lame (mostly because of how COLD it gets). Many of the parties end up getting busted by the cops before 12. I found that many of the people I met here were very close minded. On a side note, this school is WAY overpriced. I'll end it with a bit of advice: avoid this school unless you are from Vermont/New England, and have money to waste. There are schools where you will have more fun and get an equally good education for a much lower price.

Question
UVM is a good school but you shouldBrightAnimal Studies
UVM is a good school but you should really make sure that it is right for you. There are lots of pot smokers and druggies and everybody drinks. THe classes are large but that is to be expected. I am majoring in animal science and specializing in the equine program. So far i have not learned anything that will help me when i get out of school. The equine program is very very basic and everyone here loves cows. As for the city of burlington, if you like homeless people walking up to you when you are shopping or watching people sleep on all the benches you will love it here. I thought i would be shopping a lot more but i really haven't been. The freshmen dorms suck unless you are an honors students. The campus is also pretty spread out so its a lot of walking which is great unless its 2 degrees out which it is about half the time your here. This school is not for everyone. Mostly just for druggie hippies that love the freezing cold and like lots of pavement. This is also not a good representation of most of vermont. If you love to ski, Great! but the closest ski mountain is about an hour so get ready to waste your gas money. One last thing, UVM will nickel and dime you for all your worth... even for the instaters!
