Ok, I really hope I didn't influence any people into going to UVM with my previous comment. I left the comment about how UVM is a research institution, the food sucks, I'm a NMS semi-finalist, etc. That review was misleading and was based off less than a month spent at UVM. The school sucks compared to other schools on the same academic level because it's freezing 9 months of the year, and the social scene BLOWS. I've made good friends and we have a good time with our insular, close-knit group, but the parties in general are extremely lame compared to ASU, IN, etc. Not as many hot chicks as KS or ARiz or other comparable state schools. The frat scene is 2% of the student pop (which is not to say that a frat scene is key to a good party scene), a lot of pot-smoking if that's your thing, food gets old real fast and the meal plans are horrible, there are a decent amt of cool ppl but it's like that anywhere. I transferred after a year to a school with a better academic brand and much better social scene and bearable weather and I just feel so much better now. I strongly urge all the lazy kids out there to visit schools instead of just impulsively choosing where to go.

Question
UVM is a great academic school.Quite BrightBiology
UVM is a great academic school. I'm a bio major and it's definately known for that kind of thing, environmental majors are big here because you're so close to nature. Liberal arts majors are also good from what I hear. However, I find the student body to be self absorbed, cliquey and aloof. You really have to agree with their point of view to be acquainted with them. Smoking pot helps your chances socially, it's about the only thing to do for underclassmen under 21. There are some parties but they're usually crowded and lacking "resources." This is supposed to be a "liberal" school where people have an open mind to everything but if you drop any semi conservative idea you will be shunned by most of the student body. There are two types of people here: hippies and meatheads, and they're all shallow. But there are SOME good people here but you really really have to work to find them, but who feels like doing that much work? I'm transferring.

I'm surprised that less than 50% of students would return to UVM if given the chance. I graduated in 2000 from the College of Arts & Sciences. I loved my UVM experience. I was constantly challenged and motivated. The school has a great reputation that was even well known in Florida where I later lived and worked. I have attended three other schools and UVM is by far the most organized and my favorite.
