Work hard in high school (even though you'll look back on it years down the road and question all the stupid things you did too 'look good' for the school), do your best with standardized test (you don't have to get perfect scores) and be sincere with your essays and cover letters. They legitimately look for people, not numbers.

My essay was shit, and got me denied fromAug 10 2016Computer Science
My essay was shit, and got me denied from every other school (except for my state school) including UPenn despite the fact that I had double alumni there and applied ED. I was probably only admitted to Cornell since I was a girl in CS. Honestly this school seems to value affirmative action over everything, considering I know someone who got in with a 1600/2400. They have to keep up those golden percentages to further their business. So, just be a minority in your field.

I would recommend finding something you are passionate about,Dec 24 2015Engineering Department
I would recommend finding something you are passionate about, and then finding avenues available to you to pursue that passion. Cornell doesn't want just a resume student. Almost everyone who applies has a fantastic resume; however, what sets admits apart is their passion and desire to use (exploit even) the university for their own purposes.

Keep in mind you're coming to university with theJun 19 2014Mechanical Engineering
Keep in mind you're coming to university with the goal of studying a subject and getting a degree in that subject. Best thing you can do is show why you're interested in that subject and how you plan on earning that degree. Show them you mean business.
