Do Research Early!!! There is no substitute for hands on experience researching. It is fun, challenging, and I learned a ton doing research. You don't need a super high gpa, talk to people in the department. Try to get something out of your classes, you get what you put in. Never miss class!! Profs do notice regular attendance and that does help when they make grades.
