When I was at UCSD in the late '80s and early '90s, the environment was very supportive for independent, driven students -- whatever their passion. However, there was very little social structure outside of whatever clubs and organizations the students eventually became involved with (usually in their 3rd year). At all UC campuses, you don't use Freshman, Sophomore... You use 1st year, 2nd year.... The reason is that there's a lot of students in their 5th and 6th years. These students could probably have benefitted from stronger guidance counseling early on. On the other hand, it's an ideal place for students with independence or a passion for a single pursuit.
