Like the other PCC alumni, I had both positive and negative experiences at college. Please take this only as one person's experience. The positive: Students do learn to write appropriate college-level papers. I particularly enjoyed Dr. Rand's creative writing class. (Even when she had a concern about one of my papers, she was constructive.) Dr. Shane Smith (then Mr.), Dr. Dagher (then Mr.), Mrs. Grant, and Dr. Haston were some of the other teachers that genuinely cared. And although Dr. Y. took some time to figure out, he became a main reason that I never just gave up on college altogether. The median: I guess the "six of one, half a dozen of the other" aspect would be the aloofness of some personnel. Even though my advanced English instructor was strict, I learned a great deal from his class. My work supervisor, considered a bit of an enigma, took special care to talk personally to me when I became frustrated. I still appreciate that. The negative: At first I didn't notice, but the atmosphere wasn't always welcoming for minorities. My Japanese roommate and I both encountered genuine nastiness from a white floorleader. It's only in retrospect that I see this behavior as prejudice because this floorleader was only nasty to non-white students. The other major negative point is the way PCC's psychology classes discount mental ailments as legitimate health concerns. I believe the attitude "good Christians don't become depressed" is both uncaring and uninformed. PCC is definitely not for everyone. If you're one who thrives in a rigidly structured environment, then consider PCC. If you prefer more leeway, you might want to look elsewhere.
