When I applied to school back in '95, UCR was my last choice. At the time, I wanted to go to UCLA. That didn't work in my favor, so I chose UCR. I'll be honest, if UCLA had said yes, I would have accepted. Now, having graduated from UCR, I must say that I enjoyed every, single, minute of it, made lifelong friends and used all the resources. You see, college is what you make of it. I have heard of several people talk about other UC's, saying both good and bad things about these schools. Its like that at every school you go to. There are goods and bads about UCLA, UCR, USC, and every school in America! What is really important is how you make your degree work for yourself after college. Instructors and counselors constantly tell students to get work experience and/or do internships while in college. I know a UCR alum making $50, 000 a yr working for the city of long beach as a result of an internship. Because UCR is the smallest of the UC's(well, i don't know about now due to population growth) internship opp. such as UCDC in Washington DC, UC LEADS and The Summer Graduate Research Program in Science and Engineering are vast and frequently open their doors to UCR students. My advice: Take advantage of them! Social life on campus is cool. Like I said, its what you make of it, no matter the campus. There are many hot, respectful and beautiful women at Riverside! The parties are off the hook too! Don't listen to people who say "oh well, there's no social life". There just admitting they don't have a social life. Now, the city of Riverside is pretty dangerous in various parts. My advice: stay away! Their isn't too much night life as there is in LA or MYC. My sugg, go to Sevilla's in Downtown Riv. or Club Vibe on any given night. Your bound to hook up or at least get a number. Also check out Lake Alice in downtown. They have great live music. The Mission Inn also has great food and dancing I believe. Now, these places are no Hollywood Blvd in LA or House of Blues in LA, but they work. And are fun, if you go with the right people! Also, if there is a party you know of, go to it! UCR is growing in reputation and i am gonna make this prediction today(5/15/05) and i hope someone, especially negative UCR alumni read this: in five years, it will be one of the top 50 schools in the country. Yea, not as good as UCLA or Berkeley(right now), but consider how damn popular and old those schools are and how many fucken people apply to them! UCR is great school. It's important to look at the good sides of life and not harp on the negative, like quite a few people have done on this website. Look at the positives because college and LIFE are too short for negatives. Currently, I am working as a reporter for a local paper called The S.B. Sun. My UC education and INTERNSHIPS(get it!) are really paying off these days! UCR ALUM and PROUD OF IT!mike.
