Major: (This Major's Salary over time)
Personally, I think Knox is perfect. My major department--Classics--is small, but the professors are dedicated, accessible, and knowledgeable. Knox does a good job of offering diverse and interesting courses in all subjects, and I have had no "bad" experiences with any classes. The most unorthodox class I've yet taken is Freshman Preceptorial, which is required for all freshmen. Basically, it's an introduction to the liberal arts. Students read various texts organized around a central theme and then discuss them in class. The professors do a good job of choosing thought-provoking books that provide a lot of interesting discussion topics. I can't imagine going to any other school. I've spoken to my friends at other big universities, and while they are taking speech and math and other introductory required courses, I was taking courses like Human Origins and Beginning Ancient Greek. The professors here value thought over memorization and discussion over lecture, which I have greatly enjoyed. Social life is not lacking too badly. Galesburg itself is a bit slow, but there are some good restaurants not too far away, as well as the Orpheum Theatre, which is a beautiful old-fashioned theatre where the Knox-Galesburg Symphony performs. However, the college makes an effort to provide entertainment. Just last week they had a preview showing of the movie "Good Night and Good Luck" by George Clooney. Also, at the beginning of the year we had the famous Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko come and spend three days on the campus, giving talks and recitals. There are plenty of clubs and organizations that meet during the week. The weekends are a bit more slow, but there are still things to do. A lot of the clubs are fairly small but still active. The students are open-minded, if generally a bit more liberal. I can't imagine myself anywhere else. I strongly recommend this to anyone who wants a small-college experience with dedicated professors and lots of opportunities, I would suggest you look into Knox.
