UCR is what you make of it. I am a very social and out going person, so I came in as freshman with the intent to party and meet new people. I joined a Greek sorority my freshman year and was very involved. I would say 80% of my friends are Greek and 20% of my friends are from the dorms or from class. UCR's faculty is fairly approachable and understanding. If you go to your professor's office hours and talk to them, they can be lenient with paper extensions etc. UCR is a large school but feels like a small community, which is nice. You can make your mark on campus like the Student Council, Greek Life, Clubs, Theater. UCR is somewhat competitive like Biological Sciences is cut throat but everything else isn't. It's not too hard to leave your own stamp here. The downfall is that a lot of people commute to UCR so weekends are dead. Everyone is back home or visiting the OC or LA which is about an hour away. If you want a crazy party school than dont go to UCR. UCR has a small population of students who always party all the time, so rumors fly fast. If you are a social person, you'll be fine at UCR if you want to be more social but are shy, than you have to open yourself up more. This isn't like UCSB where the are parties all the time and people will make you drink. I wish UCR had more school spirit and a football team. Students are friendly but I wish our school was more united and gung-ho UCR. People joke around how they are Trojans (USC) or Bruins (UCLA) for life. UCR students joke around how they dont even own one piece of UCR clothing. I made good friends here and for that I'm glad I came to UCR. You make the most of what you have, and thats what I have done.
