I'm sure many people have said it before, but there is nothing like going to school in DC, especially for those interested in international affairs or gov't. It's possible to get internships at any sort of place -- from nonprofits, to gov't agencies, law offices, campaign organizations, etc., and most students do. DC offers a good social atmosphere too -- not too distracting like NYC and not too boring like the burbs. There are a bunch of free museums, landmarks, bars/clubs, etc. Some parts of the city are dangerous, but Georgetown is situated in the best & safest part of the city -- a few blocks away from where politicians & gov't officials (John Kerry, Albright) live. For being a university located in a major city, it is quite safe & actually has its own campus. Academically, Georgetown is very challenging. The students that come here expect a challenge and are here to learn, so I feel like it's not a problem. The best part is that people here really don't compete with each other academically. I get a sense that people compete more with themselves -- trying to do the best they can do -- than with other students. It makes for a cooperative & friendly academic environment. Most students have lived abroad and/or done an amazing service project before getting here. These students usually continue with their interests throughout college. There are service groups for people of all interests, and most of the junior class studies abroad either during the summer or regular school semesters. I came to Georgetown expecting people to get into stupid political discussions all the time. So far, I really haven't seen too much of that. I think most of the students who go here are smart enough to not be closeminded hold entirely partisan perspectives. It seems like people are more interested in solving problems than causing them. The only thing I don't like about the school is that most people are really ... preppy. Looking around, I can pretty much see the entire JCrew spring catalog on display. While some people may actually be shallow, I've come to find that people who look preppy and rich on the outside may not actually be stuck up. I guess they wear whatever they do because that's what they grew up around.
