UIC failed me on 2 fronts. It was impossible to create a social life, and when I fell into a deep depression 2nd semester, the school did absolutely nothing to help. Attending UIC was one of the worst decisions I ever made. I'm happy to be out, but with a semester of F's on my record now, I just don't know how things are going to work out. Do NOT go to this school if you want to make friends & meet new people! No one is interested in meeting you. The people in your classes will be mostly commuters, and the people in your dorm will be ridiculously attached to their families and high school friends. I tried so hard to form new friendships (and I'm definitely a social person!), but no one was interested in having that "college experience." Everyone who chooses UIC is from the area, so a lot of people in the dorms went home every weekend to chill with their friends from home--which is fine if you're willing to make new friends, too, but so many people weren't. I got stuck with a racist roommate 1st semester (I'm white, she was black), and when I switched 2nd semester, things improved for a while, but then all this stupid high school drama erupted (someone slept with someone and I wasn't supposed to tell, apparently...this is seriously the type of bullshit people at UIC are concerned with) and I was shunned by my floor. I had a good German professor both semesters, but I stopped going to class due to my own personal issues. Most of your prof's and TA's in the math/science departments won't speak English, but I didn't really encounter anyone who was outright mean or unhelpful. English classes at UIC are a joke, because a good percentage of your classmates will be incapable of stringing two sentences together. I had to take the second semester of the freshman writing requirement (thank GOD AP exams/ACT got me out of the 1st semester of it), and you could tell that my Prof basically wanted to drown himself. The course was a joke, and my classmates were downright stupid. I blame UIC for this, not the students. UIC doesn't really give a fuck if you speak English or not, and I witnessed a lot of hardworking students drop out entirely. They simply weren't prepared for a 4-year university and should never have been admitted in the first place. If you do make the monumentally stupid decision to attend UIC, don't live on west campus. I repeat: DO NOT LIVE ON WEST CAMPUS. There are absolutely NO advantages. And if you choose to commute, well...I pity you, I really do. You will be miserable.
