UVM is a great school located in a great city. It's just big enough to offer the great resources a large university has to offer, but small enough to offer the advantages of a medium-sized college. It's true that you will feel somewhat like "just a number" in some of the larger classes, but every professor I have encountered has bothered to learn names and will always accommodate for extra office hours if needed. Partying is definitely big at UVM, but if it's not your thing that's okay! There's plenty to do other than party, and if you take some time and look around you will find a great group of kids who aren't into partying either. The people here are laid back and all about doing what they love. It's so easy to strike up a conversation with someone in the student center. The academics can sometimes be what you make of it. If you want to just scrape by, no one will stop you as long as you stick to larger lecture classes and some of the liberal arts. However, as soon as you get more specialized in your major you will find that the work is challenging. Opportunities to get involved in research aren't limited to just graduate students, however it is rare to see a freshman or sophomore participating in a research project.
