As with any college, Northeastern has its ups and downs. This is definitely a good university with a huge potential. However, not everything is perfect. So far I have seen and lived good and bad moments. Academics: Northeastern U is one of the fastest rising schools in America, and this is not without reasons. While the university?s co-op program plays a huge part in NU?s rising popularity, the academics are also responsible for the huge increase in NU?s ranking. From what I?ve heard, every college here offers strong academics. As a business major, let me tell you that the College of Business Administration is now one of the best in the country. Classes are challenging, but the teachers and advisors are willing to do anything to help you out. For a private university, that is quite rare, so take full advantage of it. I also heard that the Engineering program here is top-notch as are the science and pre-med programs. Social life: Making friends here can be a challenge depending on who you are. Most people here perfectly reflect the stereotypical college student you see in teen movies: Heavy drinkers, party lovers, beer-pong worshipers and people that live by and for mainstream culture. If you are an independent-spirited person who tries and stay away from pop culture, is not into partying 24/7 or does not listen to Lady Gaga, Kesha, Hip-Hop, Mainstream Rock and the likes, making friends will be one of the biggest challenges you will ever have to face. Thankfully, there are other ways of making friends, like hanging out with classmates (as long as you do not talk just about classes and stuff like that) or joining a club (there are over 250 of them). As many people have said before, you will eventually end up meeting people with who you will get along well. Another thing to watch out for while looking for friends: never judge people by their looks or apparent personality. Just because you're nice to them doesn't mean that they'll be nice in return. Some people here will in fact don't give a flying shit about you at all and not want to hear from you or let you help them (if needed, they might even let you know that they do not want you around). Make sure to connect with as many people as possible to know who can be a good friend or not. One last thing to point out about the student body here is the diversity. While the vast majority of students here are white, middle to upper class, catholic, irish-english-italian-polish, suburban kids from the northeast, there are also people from different types of culture, places, race, walks of life, political ideologies and so on. You will meet a certain array of people, and that will become more likely in years to come. Boston: Boston is.... many things at the same time. While it is a beautiful city with great things to see, it is at the same time one of the most boring cities imaginable. Unless you have a fake ID, are into attending fart parties or are over 21, there is not much to do at night. Thankfully, during the day, there may be a few things to do (especially during the summer), but the students here do not seem to take full advantage of this. The university and several clubs/organizations will, nevertheless, find ways for students to go off campus and do things. If you join many student organizations, you?ll end seeing how hard the university wants its student to discover boston. Overall, NEU is a great place to go to. You do need to prepare yourself for it though. Even tho I am still a freshman here, I feel as if the next few years are going to be amazing.
