The only negative thing that bothers me about UCR is the lack of school spirit. Students come to UCR butt hurt because they didn't get into their top UC choice and so what they feel the need to do is bash on the school they are currently attending. Logical? No. I am so sick of hearing people say that UCR is not a good school. To be honest, UCR was my first choice when it came to applying to a UC school, so I was happy to come here. People in my high school would have a somewhat negative stigma of UCR and so coming in I thought the academics wouldn't be as difficult but I was wrong. Don't be fooled by what people say, remember that this is still a UC school and so the academics are good. The professors are great, they are usually approachable with the exception of few. Actually there was one professor who I think deserves mention and that is Goldberry Long. She is part of the department of creative writing and let me just say that she is a breath of fresh air. I am a creative writing major and so for me, she was fantastic; I feel like I've improved so much just after taking one of her classes. Moving on, the campus itself is beautiful. There is a little section close by the Science library and Physics building that is just amazing. There are quite of few hills especially if you are planning on dorming in Pentland. The hill from campus to Pentland is short but nevertheless a struggle especially when its hot, and it can get really hot in Riverside. Social life in Riverside can seem none existent at points because the city of Riverside itself, I have to admit, can get a bit dull at points. The University Village is a good place to pass the time, there's a theater and a couple of restaurants. The students at UCR are generally friendly people. I haven't really met anyone that was arrogant or closed off. UCR is also a very diverse campus, its true, though I have noticed that quite a few people tend to usually make friends with people of same ethnic backgrounds as them. That is in no way, me trying to hint at racism or such, I actually believe that it's because people usually come from places where they were surrounded by other people of their race that they don't know if they can to relate to other backgrounds. Trust me though people do get over it and I do have friends who are from different ethnicities opposed to mine to prove it. As for making friends, I suggest if you are planning on attending that you dorm your first year. Most of the friends you make are the ones you meet in your dorm. So if you are planning on commuting, I know that's its cheaper and everything, but definitely consider dorming at least your first year. Oh and here's some advice in general for making friends at college: the first two weeks is the best time to make friends so go for it, because after that it gets a lot harder. All in all, I think UCR is a great school to come to.
