GWU has good academics if you are in the right program. Graduate programs are better and are more highly ranked. Undergraduates, do not expect a structured experience, and involved teachers. William & Mary is a better school for that type of environment. There are good teachers and good classes, but teachers are not very helpful and somewhat cold. They are more concerned with their jobs/research/graduate students. The administration at GWU makes almost every process incredibly complicated. The school is designed as a business, and you are treated as a cog in a wheel. If you are from the north/city and use to this mentality, the adjustment might not be hard. If you are use to a structured environment or from the south, the adjustment is harder. It is what you make it. Some people love it, some people hate it. It does not exactly feel like a campus or a community. There are likely better schools for the money, and you could have a more enjoyable experience at other schools. Also, the undergrad program has fallen in the rankings recently. Good Luck.
