If you're thinking about going here and you have the option of anywhere else in VA, even community college, go there. This school was an absolute waste of my time and money. All the negative reviews on here are absolutely true. What I haven't heard much about is the res life department. It is absolute shit. If you want to move out, switch roommates, etc. there's no luck here. RA's and everyone all the way up to the director do not want to help you. Every RA is two faced. Just hope you get a perfect roommate so you don't have deal with this. As for the people and social scene: Half the people are on a quest to get wasted every night of the week and the other half are in christian clubs (similar to frats) and shun you if you're not. My first semester, when most people made friends in their dorms/ orientation group right away, I was forced out of my comfort zone and joined countless clubs and activities to find my 'niche'. I was determined to make JMU work for me. Second semester and still no niche, because most people meet friends at parties or in their sororities. People find their friends at drunken parties and want to keep those friends because they are close minded and don't want to deal with anyone different from them. During my year there, I've heard countless other horror stories about roommates, the social scene, etc and only wish I'd heard them sooner. I had never really heard anything bad about JMU until I got there, it's like a cult. I'm transferring, and wish I'd gotten out at spring semester. don't go to this shithole.
