Major: (This Major's Salary over time)
UCSC is a tough place to get used to. People either love it or they dont. The people that dont love it, get used to it or leave. A lot of people from metropolitan areas, [the city, L.A.] receive a major culture shock when first arriving here. The most surprising thing to them is all the trees. Social life is tough because it is pretty much a city on a hill. The town on the bottom is fairly sleepy and the best entertainment usually comes from going elsewhere, like all the nature-y hiking and camping places around this area, and from a night-life city like San Jose. People on campus are very friendly, and you can say hi to virtually anyone you want and not be scoffed at or ignored. Academics are tougher than everyone would assume, but not cut-throat. You work at your own pace almost completely independent of other students. Academics are harder here than people expect. Its just like every other university, i dont know what the hell are people expecting; maybe pop-up books and see-and-say's? Liberal politics are big. 1/4 the campus has an agenda of some sort. The other 3/4 are normal people. Some expect Santa Cruz to look like something out of a Woodstock movie, but the hippie thing died long ago. The only thing left is the weed and the politics. Lots of strong advocacy for lesbian/gay/bisexual/transexual issues, issues for people of color, issues regarding women. Easy place to not be marginalized. Really relaxed pace of life. Sometimes too slow for some people. Thats probably why we're the slugs.
