Academic:
Your academic experience may vary depending on your major, advisor, professor and department. The Mass Comm department has very good professors, but the department as a whole is unprofessional and disorganized. It was impossible to get a simple question answered. Personally, I would advise students to avoid this department or double major with something else. Yes, the Mass Comm department can be fun, but I feel most Mass Comm students are lost post graduation due to lack of guidance or a realistic outlook regarding post graduation. The Business department is okay so far, but I am only Pre-Business, so I cannot give a fair review. (I would recommend majoring in Business instead of Mass Communications because you can still work in the communications field with a business degree. Plus a Business degree is more versatile and the Business school at Towson is nationally accredited unlike the Communications department.) Overall, you will get a good education here. Registration is the only major issues you will face here. (Fifth year senior are not uncommon here and class registration takes a lot of the blame.) If you get wait-listed for a class than show up to the classes anyway because most professors are cool about that.
Social life:
Yes, most students go home on the weekend and the campus may feel like a ghost town Fri-Sun, but you can still have fun here. There are plenty of ways to get involved and there are tons of activities during the weekdays. IF you cannot make friends then it is your own fault not the schools.
Minority Perspective:
The school could do a lot more in order to allow minority students feel welcomed. Yes, there are plenty of culturally diverse student groups and there are a few international housing locations, but something is missing. The school still feels a little divided and no one is trying to bring student groups together. Luckily, I managed to break away from this division, but if you are a minority student, this includes all minority groups such as people with disabilities, then it might be hard to break away from this division amongst minority groups. I would recommend joining several cultural groups. Do not limit yourself to one cultural student group.
Students:
There are a few brilliant students and there are a lot of slackers, but you will get that at any college. Some students? have not grown up yet, but these students can be easily avoided. So, if you are looking for a school with perfect little students then you should end your search now. Overall, the students are friendly?for the most part. I had a few moments where I was appalled by the students? lack of respect and behavior, but this can happen anywhere. Try to separate yourself from students like that.
Transfer experience: I had the worst transfer experience with Towson, but this can vary amongst students. Seriously, this school needs to work on their communications skills because I didn't get an acceptance letter until two months before classes started. I tried emailing, calling, and visiting the school several times, but I never received a clear response to anything. TUCARES, a programmed designed to help transfer students should be rename to TU doesn't really CARE. The fact that all my credits transferred was the best and only good thing about my transferring process. Overall, this experience will vary, some people may have a pleasant process.
