Be prepared to work. The campus is extraordinary; you will be compelled to succeed. Students bleed blue. I hardly know anyone that doesn't absolutely love Duke. Bear in mind that the kinds of people who review their universities on sites like this either love or hate the institution, so this isn't the best way to get the general feel of the student body. You need to visit. Durham is super sketchy, but as long as you make smart decisions and don't go out alone at night, you won't have any trouble. Duke's been upping the security in response to student complaints. The bus system is crappy, but it has improved ten-fold since I started last year. Drinking is extremely prevalent on campus, but you can easily find people who range from consuming moderate amounts to no alcohol. Clubs are your friend because they get you involved with people who are like-minded. The academic advising system is fantastic and should be taken advantage of. Pre-med, science, and math classes are hard--bear this in mind when deciding what tier university you want to attend.

The further you are from the mainstream (minority, gay, non-frat, alternative), the more you will be aware of it. The school is very mainstreamed. If you do not care about basketball, you will be annoyed with how obsessed everyone is with it. And Durham has very little with regard to activities and real nightlife. If none of these bother you, or you can get past it, you will have a great experience and a great education.
