Learn how to work the system or else you will suffer. i'm an undergrad engineering and they will WEED you out. average for all math/science related lecture courses are in the 40%-50% range and will only curve to a 70%. about half of the prospective ME majors don't make the GPA cutoff because the university is just too large. can't sufficiently teach +40,000 students. thus control all majors. if decide to quit engineering sophomore year you can not 'transfer' into the business college because it is also controlled. you are basically stuck going into liberal arts or the science college.
hardly any exams are partial credit- pretty much all multiple choice exams graded by a computer (HUGE NEGATIVE = no partial credit = 40% - 50% range for a grade). also, the teacher will usually NOT make up the exam- the head of the department will- which means your teacher may teach you material that is irrelevant because he/she does not know what type of questions are going to be on the exam either! most teachers do not speak english in the math/science/engineering departments. and if they do speak english, it is usually a graduate student who does not know HOW to teach.
students. slim pickings of the bright ones. not very competitive/smart unless in the honors college and a few engineering kids. not many kids know how to write here and they will NOT TEACH YOU. i turned in a high school paper for my freshman composition/english class and received an A (i received a B- in it in high school....).
social life is amazing if you come from a small town and drank in high school a ton. i am in a top notch sorority here and parties/bars are GREAT. but if you are coming from urban/metropolitan area the nightlife will get old because the bars are not trendy/hip and there is only one club that not many kids go to.overall, if you have the $ go to another top notch small college where you will learn material NOT learn how to beat the weed-out system.

Penn State is a wonderful experience if you try to branch out and get involved in clubs(100's of clubs and intramurals). Yes there will be some very large classes for 100 and 200 level classes but personally it doesn't effect me at all(just get there slightly early and sit in the front and you have the same feel as a small class room experience). Once you get into the 300 and 400 level courses classes will be between 15-30 students. If you enjoy sports this is the school for you. The football games will be some of the best times of your life and do live up to the hype. Even if you do not enjoy football, this is an entirely different experience with the spirit and chants. There are plenty of other sports to watch to which include, Volleyball(4 year straight women's champs/very fun experience with the band and most games are sold out at rec hall), Basketball(up and coming program with our new coach), wrestling, baseball. There is somewhat of a heavy greek life at this school however, I am not part of a fraternity and there are plenty of opportunities to party without being involved in Greek Life. The academics are challenging if you want to pick the difficult classes and most professors are very friendly and are willing to work with you. Some negative reviews I read were about how jerky the Frat guys are and how they are all drunks; I would say this is true some of the time however there are plenty of nice Frats guys that really do help the community. My simple answer if you are worried about these "bros" just don't get involved with greek life. I am excited for the next 3 years. WE ARE.....PENN STATE!!! The grade I would give my school is an A+...with my bias aside I would give my school an A- or 91/100.

If you are a suburban white kid from "Outside Philly" who plans on either going Greek or staying in your high school clique and only focusing on partying than this is definitely the place for you. If not, than I'd look somewhere else. I'm very extroverted/sociable yet most of the people here aren't looking for new friends. Also, a lot of the students can only talk about partying. I like going out on weekends, but I also like having meaningful conversations with people, which rarely happens here. The academics here are very good but that doesn't make up for the people you are stuck here with. In conclusion, when picking a college make sure that you like the people there, because at a place like this you will be stuck with them in the middle of nowhere for four years.
