Concord University

Truly...I'd NEVER want anyone to go through what Concord has put me through! I've been lied to by advisors, been given wrong info (by school officials) many times, and regretted each & every day...that I made the foolish decison to come here!

Campus Aesthetics: B+, Useful Schoolwork: F

Good school but sexist athletic department. Jim and Pat Hardin are terrible and most of the ADs have been jokes. However, the History/English departments were great. They need someone with a clue (NOT Curry's wife) to teach some pre-law classes. Like, maybe someone who has PRACTICED as a lawyer.

Alumnus Male -- Class 2000

I was accepted by two schools after finishing (not graduating) at Camden County College: Morehead State University and Concord.

I chose an out-of-state school because it would've been too expensive to attend a school in-state, no matter which one I chose.

When I first came to Concord, I was a little disappointed. Other than the Greek and Christian scenes (read: Christian fundamentalist/crazy Baptist), there was little to do. On the weekends, just about everybody would go home, while I'd stay on campus and watch football all weekend, which is what I did back home in Jersey.

Over time, I befriended what the "social elite" consider the outcasts of campus society: The pagans, the Magic/D&D geeks, and the Amtgarders. Amtgard is the most visible organization on campus. You'll know an Amtgarder when you see one, and trust me, Amtgard's fun, and a good stress reliever! Okay, that's enough of me plugging that group.

The professors are hit or miss. These words describe each of my professors: Condescending, devoted, indifferent, and animated. The condescending man I have for Cultural Geography (I will not mention his name) is, unfortunately, the head of his department, and will belittle you for disagreeing with his views or questioning him. I myself was belittled for correcting him on fairly simple facts. (e.g. Turks don't speak Arabic!) My devoted professor was my English professor. He piled work on us, but it wasn't busywork. It was intended to help us write better. He was devoted to us and our understanding of the subject. My indifferent professor was an adjunct, but she didn't really seem to care much for the material she was teaching. I managed to fly through the class. Fine arts is a requirement here at Concord, and my music professor made it all worth it. He was animated and made classical music interesting for all of us.

Organizations on campus are what you make of them. There are groups to cater to essentially every type of person on campus, including the uber-geeks, including the Gamer's Club, Comic Book Club, Anime Club, and Amtgard (medieval re-enactment and live roleplaying) If you must go Greek, there are plenty of organizations to choose from here. If you're a religious fanatic, there are Christian organizations here too, but be careful not to become a brainwashed, holier-than-thou idiot, especially toward the Wiccans. The Film Society is a bit snooty, and their film choices are more than obscure at times.

Concord is commonly called "The Campus Beautiful" for its pristine, manicured campus. While this is the case most of the time, there are times where maintenance falls asleep on the job, and mushrooms can be a problem when the groundskeepers don't care.

On-campus entertainment, again, is what you make of it. The typical Concord entertainment consists of either: A tired/obscure/bad comedian, a Christian band, or a bingo night. These can be made fun, but usually everybody goes home on these weekends.

The housing is hit or miss. The Towers have everything, but this housing is mainly reserved for the Greeks (but a few non-Greeks live there too), and the other buildings do not know the word "elevator," so prepare to do a lot of walking. Dining is also hit or miss. If you have an iron stomach, or deep pockets, you'll be fine.

If you choose Concord, the school is what you make of it. Depending on your major, you'll either get a lot of help, or very little. If you're big on the Greek scene, this school is perfect for you. If you're very much into religion, this school is perfect for you. If you're a loner-type, Concord's not for you. You will constantly get pressured to get involved in something.That's my twenty five cents.
