UVA definitely has the good, as well asBrightPolitical Science
UVA definitely has the good, as well as the bad. The campus ("grounds") is beautiful, and the surrounding city of Charlottesville always has something going on. Greek life is a huge part of the social scene, at least for me, and that also adds to weekend events. UVA also just completed the "south lawn" project, which houses a new building for the government department, and most of my classes are there. This is a much prettier and newer building than New Cabell, which is currently being renovated. It's basically falling apart, so hopefully it will be done soon.

The classes are okay - it probably depends on which classes you take, but a lot of mine are very large (think a few hundred people) that break up into smaller discussion sections with a TA. How you do in a class really depends on the TA you get; if you get a bad one, you are totally screwed. Some of them don't speak English and don't know how to teach, and going to the professor isn't too helpful. If you need help with a specific problem, the TA is expected to help you, whereas the professor is there to discuss larger problems or ideas. My friend is in the Engineering school, and I'm told their office hours are different, but I haven't been too impressed as far as the government department goes.Overall, I really do love UVA, but the classes haven't exactly been what I expected, and my GPA definitely shows it. I was expecting more exciting and interesting topics and lectures, and for the most part, they are just extremely boring and I don't want to go to class most of the time.

Question
I certainly enjoyed my year and a halfQuite BrightChemistry
I certainly enjoyed my year and a half at UVa and I look forward to the remaining years. Something to consider is that academic advising before you declare a major is awful. I have met some of the most useless advisors who did not have a clue about science programs because they were history professors. You should have some idea what you want to do before you come here or you will get lost in the liberal arts atmosphere. Seek out people in the fields that interest you...these professors/TA's/upperclassmen are much more helpful than your assigned advisor.

Second, try something different. College is a time to experience. I initially had my doubts about joining a fraternity, but after being dragged out by some first year suitemates to some frat parties and rush, I found a frat I liked and made so many good friends that I never would have met otherwise. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I made my first year. You can pledge a fraternity and do well in course work (esp. 1st year) as long as you budget your time properly.

When second year rolls around, do not take 3 "weed-out" courses in a semester. It is possible to do well, but you will have no life outside of schoolwork. Pre-med is competitive so be prepared to encounter some cut-throat behavior. Get involved in as many activities as you can without overextending yourself. Try to enjoy every second of it because it's already second year and I am still wondering where first year went. Take a chance, streak the lawn, explore the underground tunnels, apply for echols, ask out that pretty girl in your chem class...you fail 100% of the time if you never try.

Question
I came to UVa as an international student,Anthropology
I came to UVa as an international student, knowing absolutely no one. If I could relive the last 4 years for the rest of my life, I would. Academically, intellectually, environmentally, socially, The University has been for me, a better experience than I could have even imagined. It has been said that it's too large, that it's full of cliques, that it doesn't cater to the individual- I graduated from middle school with 7 other students, and from high school with 81, and yet I found The University to be a personal, intimate place, one in which I would consider spending the rest of my life. I feel like I'm in an episode of Cheers or Friends most of the time- this is literally 'where everybody knows your name'. I refer to the Dean of Students by her first name, I had dinner at my professor's house last week. Academically it has been amazing- I agree, not every student is Stephen Hawking, and not every person has come to dedicate 4 years to the pursuit of academia, but unless you seek out easy classes, you will be challenged. The professors have no reason to inflate grades or to mollycoddle their students, thus they don't. They recognise those who put time and effort into their studies and in my experience there has been no professor who hasn't been more than willing to go out of their way to help.

The traditions at UVa are incredible and truly add to the wonderful culture on grounds- from the way students treat each other with respect to the way they apply the Honor code to every aspect of their lives; history, tradition and respect permeate the actions of most of the students. (I'm not trying to pretend this is Utopia, as with any university, there are problems, big ones, but people are working hard to change them, and overall they are a minor part of what happens.)

Any university is what you make of it, if you choose to be unhappy, then you will be and in that case, of course, another university would be better for you. I chose to love UVa (the choice was made easy for me) and I have had the best 4 years of my life. Yes, there were ups and downs, but they were worth it for the Honor of Honors, and for the look of the Lawn as the lights are lit, and as the leaves fall. Here's to you, Mr Jefferson.
