Positive Negative Neutral Advice
I am a senior Literature major at UNCAQuite BrightEnglish
I am a senior Literature major at UNCA graduating in December of 2014. I transferred in from a private university the second semester of my sophomore year. It was winter when I came and I was not used to the cold which sucked at first but I grew to like it. I was really scared coming in that as a transfer I would not be able to make friends and that everyone had probably already gotten into groups like some of the other comments say but I found it wasn't like that at all. My first week here I joined the huge chorus class to fulfill my art requirement and the girl in front of me invited me out with her friends. Mostly everyone at UNCA is really friendly and not at all like I had imagined. Although many people make friend groups when they come in as freshman, they usually do not keep the same friends throughout the four years. There are many opportunities to anyone who is willing to go to things. Even just getting a job or going to class and you can usually find someone who is willing to hang out. The teachers are amazing. I did not LOVE all the teachers I have had (I also was part of the accounting and music departments) but every teacher I have had has been more than willing to make time for me and they really seemed to want me to do well. I'm not going to sugar coat it, if you are transferring and are away from friends and family like I was, the first roughly 6-9 months will probably be a little tough on you. I tried to pretend like I wasn't having a hard time but really now that I think back it wasn't ideal. I promise that if you work through it, you will really grow to love UNCA and the people and teachers here. I love my roommates and my classes and if I was asked to transfer, I wouldn't dream of it.

Question
I grew up between UNC and Duke, soQuite BrightBiology
I grew up between UNC and Duke, so I am used to a more intelligent, preppier, more basically normal environment than Asheville is. Unless you consider yourself a hipster, a generally strange person, social reject or you want to be a hipster then Asheville is not for you. Asheville is a very small school filled with a lot of very similar people who claim to be "open-minded," when in all reality they are extremely close-minded towards anyone that has any ideas that do not agree with their own. I came to Ashveille with the intentions of transferring to another private and significantly higher ranked school. After my first semester I was incredibly depressed. The environment drives people to do drugs. If you go there you will be constantly surrounded by people doing all sorts of drugs. It is completely normal for people to trip on a daily basis, and everyone smokes weed, CONSTANTLY. People are also very clique-ish and incredibly just strange. I hate this school with a passion and it really ruined my college experience. I was planning on dropping out after this semester and leaving the country because I was simply repulsed with the idea of ever having to be in a situation like this again. Thankfully I talked to my friends and they convinced me to transfer after this semester. I really liked the city of Asheville prior to my horrendous experience, and now I hate the ares. After this semester I will never again return to Western North Carolina unless I am forced to. I have never been so thankful to come home and to simply be surrounded by normal people who don't constantly do drugs and try to express their individuality by dressing like homeless people. I really just want to warn people who think that there will be diversity and that there will be normal people in Asheville, because there really aren't besides Athletes. They Athletes will not talk to you unless you are an athlete or they want to have sex with you so don't go in thinking that you are going to be an exception, you wont. The greek life is a sad joke and a disgrace to other greek life, it is filled with people that really just do not belong in greek life. If you are a weirdo and think you belong in Asheville then please go there I do not want you anywhere near me, but if you are a normal person and want any type of a future or positive college experience then don't go there. THE WORST SCHOOL EVER.

Question
For the right student, this school is fine.BrightEconomics
For the right student, this school is fine. Having previously gone to a university that had close to 15,000 students, going to UNCA's population of 3500 was a shock. It reminded me of high school. Most students are very cliquey and are very wary of transfer students. You will also see the same people in your classes pretty much every single semester. Like I said, if that's what you're looking for, then that is fine for you.

However, if you are looking for a school to just get a degree, 99% of the teachers care and are more than willing to help. All of the ones I've had answer their email in a timely manner, have nice office hours and are willing to talk. Same goes for every other office on this campus. Everyone is willing to help. The campus police aren't as bad as other campuses, if you need them, they're there. Granted I say that because I'm over 21 and didn't stay on campus but did have to ask them some questions.

I honestly was not challenged in the majority of my classes. While I liked the professors and the subject matter, I can only count 2 classes out of my time here as being challenging. I felt like it was busy work. I have taken all upper level classes 300-400 level.

Having grown up in WNC, I was already used to some of Asheville's going ons. The music scene is ok, there's plenty of little shops, there's the parkway and nice restaurants. My advice to students looking at this school would be to weigh the pros and cons of going here. Look at the size, location, and please, realize that there are other places you can go and get a degree from.
